Overview

GBA designed the mechanical, electrical, and security systems for a 32,900 square-foot communications switching center expansion with a two-story addition.

Engineering Design

GBA’s work in support of this expansion to a mission critical facility included systems serving new UPS rooms, a new electrical room, and other new support spaces. The firm:

  • Evaluated the commercial power service, transformer, emergency generator and AC power equipment capacities relative to the calculated requirements.
  • Designed the installation of:
    • A new (second) AC electrical service to support the new addition.
    • New transfer switches, transformers and AC switchgear for new main-tie-tie-main 480 volt power services for the new addition.
    • New N+N manufacturer-packaged enclosed diesel generators for the building addition.
    • Portable generator tap boxes and associated automatic transfer switches.
    • New underground duct banks for major equipment utilizing the Neher-McGrath calculations and software.
    • AC power to the new UPS plant including the Battery Monitoring System, PDUs and RPPs.
    • AC power distribution from the new RPPs to equipment cabinet locations in the new Network Equipment Room.
    • Large AHU’s with pumped refrigerant free-cooling capability to serve the data hall space.
    • Computer room air-conditioners to provide cooling for the UPS rooms.
    • AC power to new HVAC equipment in the addition including the new elevator controls for a freight elevator for the addition.
  • Designed the expansion of the existing security system for the addition, including a door access system and cameras with the cooperation of the existing security firm under contract to Verizon.
