University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Foellinger Auditorium

Urbana-Champaign, IL

UIUC, Foellinger Auditorium

Overview

Foellinger Auditorium is a 17,000-square-foot historic building that serves as a concert and lecture hall for the university. This $400,000 project involved a replacement of the existing exterior dome lighting system, including 397 glass globe lighting fixtures with incandescent lamps. Deteriorated exterior conduits and outdated controls were also replaced. GBA provided engineering design services.

Exterior Lighting Replacement Design

GBA was hired to upgrade the exterior dome lighting at Foellinger Auditorium. Originally opened in 1905, the auditorium anchors the south end of the campus’s Main Quad and is known for its domed copper roof.

Project highlights include:

  • Replaced existing luminaires with new lighting fixtures using LEDs. The new lighting is aesthetically similar to the previous, architecturally significant glass globe fixtures while adding a corrosion-free base feature.
  • Replaced the existing 25W incandescent lamps with more efficient 4W LED-source lamps, cutting energy use by more than 84%.
  • Replaced the archaic, contactor-based control system with a programmable dimming control panel that provides additional energy savings and a much more user-friendly interface.
  • Replaced all exterior conduit and raceway system along the 12 battens of the dome.
  • Provided a copper roofing replacement for sidewalls along the upper and lower circumferences of the dome roof.
  • Provided roof flashing sealant and repairs around new replacement conduit sleeve penetrations.
  • Provided new copper batten saddle mounts for new lighting fixtures mounted on existing copper battens. These secure the lighting fixtures to the roof, while maintaining the existing batten installation.
