G/BA Project Manager Fiona Martin McCarthy, PE, QCxP, BEAP, LEED AP O+M, has been named by Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine as a recipient of its 2020 40 Under 40 Award.

The award is given annually to 40 nonresidential building industry professionals ages 40 and younger who stand out through an assortment of personal and professional aspects of their lives. Candidates were nominated by a professional colleague or mentor and judged by industry experts based on nine areas, including their commitment to superiority in their academic, professional, personal, and community involvement. In the May print edition and online, Consulting-Specifying Engineer honored each of these young professionals, highlighting qualities that led them to sustained success, recent professional projects, and personal achievements. Winners will receive their awards at a ceremony in Chicago in October 2020.

“If the technical expertise, breadth of experience, and confident attitudes don’t impress you, then the dedication given to mentoring, the community, and family certainly will,” says Amara Rozgus, Editor-in-Chief of Consulting-Specifying Engineer. The magazine’s biography of Fiona appears here.

Fiona, who joined G/BA in 2010, holds BSME and MS/Renewable & Clean Energy degrees from the University of Dayton. She specializes in energy efficiency and sustainable design, including energy and resource benchmarking, energy conservation studies, LEED consulting, energy efficiency systems, EPA consulting, commissioning, retro-commissioning, and occupied building commissioning (monitoring-based commissioning). Her work encompasses healthcare, commercial, science and technology, and other facility types. She is currently Project Manager for a multi-year retro- and occupied building commissioning initiative involving numerous hospitals in the Universal Health Services system.

Fiona is President of ASHRAE’s Illinois Chapter, as well as chapter Chair of Women in ASHRAE. She participates in the YEA Group and helps plan the chapter’s Technology Awards and Holiday Party. She also sits on the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Master of Energy Engineering Advisory Council.

“Fiona has developed an ever-increasing grasp of building engineering systems, operations, energy analysis, and root-cause troubleshooting,” says G/BA Vice President John Villani, PE, CCP, CEM, LEED AP. “She has rapidly absorbed information and demonstrated a skill level more typical of senior staff. Her take-charge personality has been essential for keeping clients, contractors, sub-contractors, and other G/BA staff members on task. She has mastered finance and budgeting principles required for successful project management. She’s also really fun, and has coordinated many after-work events to help the staff unwind and share personal time with colleagues.”

Fiona lives in Chicago with her husband, her baby daughter, and her mother. She enjoys singing, including serving as a church cantor, and sailing.

G/BA congratulates Fiona on this achievement and thanks her for her excellent service to the firm and its clients.
