The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Pediatric & DayRehab Center in Glenview, IL, has received an Honor Award for Interior Architecture in the 2020 Design Excellence competition, sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
G/BA was the MEP and fire protection design firm for the project, in collaboration with HDR. Exposed mechanical equipment in open ceilings is a key feature of the design, making engineering an integral part of the interior architecture.
The facility comprises 20,000 square feet created inside a one-story, multi-tenant office building, and is roughly divided equally between an adult day rehabilitation center and a pediatric rehab facility. Administrative support spaces separate the two primary areas. Cheerful colors and a variety of architectural floating volumes and acoustic baffles help break up the suite’s long, linear spaces into welcoming, human-scaled treatment zones.
G/BA’s team for the project included James Shults (Principal-in-Charge), Stephanie Goldcamp (Project Manager), and engineers Victoria Gumeniuk, Will Niemira, Melissa Pletzer, Chris Sbarbaro, Jonathan Smith, and other members of the MEP engineering staff.
