Design-Build Retro-Commissioning Pays Dividends for Healthcare Client

Presentations and Publications | Tech Tips

Design-build retro-commissioning (DBRCx) is a new approach Grumman|Butkus Associates (GBA) has developed to assist a large for-profit healthcare organization in implementing a retro-commissioning (RCx) program across multiple hospitals nationwide.

The process is detailed in an article in the June 2022 edition of Engineered Systems magazine, by GBA Project Manager Fiona Martin McCarthy, PE, QCxP, BEAP, LEED AP. The firm is providing not only typical RCx and monitoring-based commissioning services for the client, but is also designing and managing selected capital projects identified through these efforts.GBA’s in-house fault detection platform, Trend Sumo®, has been extensively utilized to identify building, system, and equipment issues, leading to improvements.

The DBRCx approach gives the client the benefit of turnkey services and has helped satisfy the objective of saving 20% of HVAC energy consumption with a full-program simple payback of four years. Fourteen facilities in the client’s national portfolio have completed the process thus far.

For details, including a summary of successes and challenged involved in the DBRCx approach, review the article. Contact GBA for additional information on this innovative approach to energy savings and operational improvements.
