LEED® Services

LEED® Services

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building certification system. LEED provides third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across several metrics, including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources.

With GrummanlButkus Associates’ history as an energy and resource consulting firm, GBA easily became an industry leader in LEED services with the program’s inception in the 1990s. To date, GBA has been involved in more than 80 LEED-certified projects, including nine Platinum certifications, in the capacity of MEP designer, commissioning agent, or LEED consultant. A dozen additional projects have certification pending.

LEED Consulting

GBA’s LEED Consulting services are available to assist our clients in all aspects of achieving a LEED rating. Services we offer include:

  • Registering projects with the US Green Building Council (USGBC)
  • Determining conformity with LEED prerequisites
  • Estimating achievable LEED credits and certification level
  • Providing recommendations for design modifications and upgrades to achieve LEED points
  • Performing LEED submission calculations (e.g. energy, water usage, lighting levels)
  • Evaluating the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) performance of the design
  • Coordinating the submission of LEED documents to the USGBC
  • Assisting with performance-based, life cycle requirements for LEED v4 and beyond

Buiding Energy Modeling

GBA offers Building Energy Modeling to evaluate the energy use of a building through simulation and analysis of the main energy-related components. Services include:

  • Modeling conceptual design to aid in design decisions
  • Analyzing alternatives as part of the integrated project design process, starting at conceptual stages through construction documentation
  • Evaluating the project’s energy savings for LEED energy credits
  • Performing energy code analysis using the Energy Cost Budget (ECB) method
  • Certifying projects as energy efficient commercial properties under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) for IRS tax deductions

LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning

GBA offers required commissioning services in support of facilities' LEED certification efforts.

LEED Design

GBA offers HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems designed for LEED certification goals. Typical strategies include:

  • Low pressure drop air systems
  • High efficiency boiler plants using condensing boilers
  • Ground-coupled heat pumps
  • Solar photovoltaic cells
  • Natural ventilation
  • Pond- or river-water cooled systems
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures
  • Dual-flush water closets
  • Energy efficient lighting
  • Daylighting controls
