Overview

GBA provided design services for a 3,000-square-foot facility, keeping an existing data center operational during construction. The triangular shape of the facility was dictated by the existing building’s footprint.

Data Center Build-Out, Design

Founded in 1969, Zebra now develops a diverse line of computers, peripherals, and related equipment. It supports clients in the manufacturing, retail, healthcare, transportation and logistics, government, and sports and entertainment sectors, among others. Its Holtsville, NY, campus, formerly part of Motorola Solutions, was acquired in 2013 to support manufacturing, administration, and other functions.

GBA recently helped the firm create a replacement data center. Features of the new facility include:

  • A 150-kW in-row cooling system.
  • A power distribution system with two 150-kVA UPS units.
  • A clean agent preaction fire suppression system.
  • A VESDA smoke detection system.

Spaces involved in the 3,000-square-foot project included a data hall, a ventilated UPS/battery room, a DEMARC room, and an office. In addition to meeting the client’s standards for temperature and relative humidity, the design provided N+1 redundancy for the cooling units and the power supply.

To keep the existing data center functional during construction, a four-phase schedule was created, including provisions for temporary cooling and power supply.
