GBA Achieves 2021 Sustain Evanston Recognition

Awards | GBA News

The Sustain Evanston program, a sustainability recognition initiative of the City of Evanston, IL, has affirmed Grumman|Butkus Associates as part of its 2021 group of recognized commercial businesses.

GBA was first listed as one of the inaugural group of Sustain Evanston organizations in 2019.

To achieve recognition, Evanston firms must submit documentation regarding their compliance in at least 10 of 20 available categories. The program was created as an aspect of the city’s effort to reach its goals in carbon neutrality, renewable electricity, and zero waste, as outlined in its Climate Action and Resilience Plan. Categories combine LEED-type themes (Energy, Water, Waste Management, Resources) with more community-oriented items.

In addition to the required recycling component (documentation of a 50% recycling diversion rate), GBA provided documentation for the following action items:

  • Implementation of an office composting program
  • Purchase of renewable energy certificates / carbon offsets
  • Installation of lighting controls, such as occupancy sensors
  • Installation of low-flow faucet aerators on sinks
  • Installation of low-flush toilets
  • Elimination of single-use bottles of water (fill station for reusale bottles installed)
  • Policies to reduce use of office paper
  • Purchase of paper products with at least 30% post-consumer recycled content
  • Implementation of strategies to create an Age-Friendly Business

“Grumman|Butkus Associates is proud to be an original Sustain Evanston business,” says Illinois President Chad Luning. “Since 1973, we have been focused on sustainable engineering solutions for our clients and on minimizing our own environmental impact.”
