G/BA worked with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District, and the Johnson Controls-Stadium Operations staff to retro-commission Miller Park, home to the Milwaukee Brewers, as a part of the LEED Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (EBOM) certification process..

Features

G/BA assisted Johnson Controls and the Milwaukee Brewers in achieving LEED EBOM certification. Miller Park was the third sports stadium and first venue with a retractable roof to achieve this certification.

  • Testing of air-handling units revealed many systems operating well above the original design airflow values. G/BA provided an ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation analysis, and systems were rebalanced to appropriate levels.
  • Game-day operation of mechanical systems was longer than required. G/BA recommended revised system operating schedules. In addition, several units were added to the game-day schedule to reduce their operating hours.
  • AHU dry-bulb economizer controls were set to 55°F. G/BA recommended increasing the changeover setpoint to 65°F to save cooling energy.
  • Static pressure setpoints on several variable air volume systems and differential pressure setpoints on secondary hot water and chilled water pumps were higher than required. G/BA recommended reducing the setpoints to save fan and pump energy.
  • Demand-controlled ventilation was added for several air-handling systems with exhaust-driven ventilation requirements to reduce energy use.
  • Reductions in outdoor air cooling requirements reduced the central plant cooling load by almost 100 tons, which will improve fan comfort in air conditioned areas on game days.
  • Facility Improvement Measures implemented during retro-commissioning will save approximately 1 million kWh, 43,000 therms, and $130,000 annually, with a simple payback of less than one year. Miller Park’s CO2 emissions were reduced by approximately 2.3 million pounds per year, the equivalent of taking 220 cars off the road for a year.
  • A portion of the funding was provided through the Wisconsin Focus on Energy Retro-Commissioning program.
