Cohn Research Building Laboratory Build-Out - Chicago, IL
Overview
The Cohn Research Building is a 180,000-square-foot, nine-story facility. The $2.2 million project included the build-out of three and one-half floors of general chemistry reserach laboratories, upgrades to existing vivarium ventilation, and various infrastructure system upgrades and enhancements.
Features
The build-out included:
- A variable air volume lab ventilation system using Phoenix air valves
- Chemical fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets connected to a large central manifolded exhaust system
- Radioisotope hoods with separate exhaust fans and HEPA filtration
- Central piped lab services, including compressed air and vacuum
Infrastructure upgrades included:
- Modifications to convert office area from 100% outside air to recirculation in order to reduce demand on the existing exhaust system and chiller plant, and to reduce cooling and heating costs
- The addition of a new 600-ton centrifugal chiller with variable speed drive and associated cooling tower
- The addition of a new central reverse osmosis (RO) laboratory water system
- Modification to animal cage washing suite ventilation to maintain required pressurization
- Enhancement to humidification control for animal holding rooms
- Complete air balancing of vivarium floors
